Care for the environment manifests in a series of initiatives and projects with concrete results. The Environmental Management Program is the first of those, created to formalize practices and to comply with sustainable development technologies.
Tramontina has adopted appropriate systems to care for the environment, such as the treatment of waste and effluents, which prevents harmful substances from being discarded into the environment.
Because of this commitment, the company increasingly invests in technologies, equipments, and projects which minimize the environmental impact and favor sustainable development in communities.
Concern and care for the environment have resulted in important achievements such as the ISO 14001 certification, which attests to Tramontina's Environmental Management System's quality.
Essential to life, water is a priority in Tramontina's environmental preservation policy. Since 1990, the company has Effluents Treatment Stations, known as ETSs, which treat and protect the sources of fresh and drinking water which feed the communities and maintain life's natural cycle.
At the ETSs, water used in the manufacturing processes go through a series of treatments before it is reused or returned to the environment with a quality that will not harm the ecosystem. Part of this water is re-applied in the manufacturing processes or in daily activities, such as toilet flushes and machine cooling systems. In some Tramontina units, the re-use rates reach 100%, an initiative which surely contributes to rationalize consumption and protect drinking water supplies.
Sensible consumption, adequate sorting and disposal of waste are essential to preserve the environment. Tramontina fully manages its solid waste, reducing and forwarding each type of waste according to its characteristics. Specific techniques are adopted and all generated residues are managed. Priority is given to reducing residues generation by controlling waste and internal re-use, thus contributing to maintain the quality of the environment.
In Carlos Barbosa, in an area damaged by a quarry, the company has an Industrial Waste Center to receive all the materials. Created to meet the needs of the Carlos Barbosa, Garibaldi, and Farroupilha units, this Center has the capacity to receive waste for 120 years. Materials such as paper, cardboard and plastic which can be recycled, but not reused in Tramontina's production processes are packaged at the Sorting Center and forwarded to be sold.
Tramontina uses systems to control its manufacturing units' emissions of particles, combustion gases (furnaces), and volatile compounds (paint fumes) to the atmosphere.
Emissions control also features lab analyses for their monitoring. By using control systems, particulate material emissions are held and forwarded as solid waste to the landfills, or can also be reused in the productive process, as in the case of sawdust and machining dust resulting from wooden products, which are collected and burnt in the furnaces for power generation.
In the states of Rio Grande do Sul and Para, Tramontina has areas to grow native species such as parica, and exotic ones (pinus and eucalyptus), available for use in the productive processes. These areas total 6,184 hectares of cultivated areas
PCAs - Permanent Conservation Areas
Not only is the aim to perpetuate the native vegetation, but also the biodiversity, the soil, water, and other natural resources.
Preserved Native Woods
It is highly important to preserve native woods in order to maintain the ecosystem, since the local vegetation is protected and therefore both plant and animal survival is ensured. Tramontina keeps: 932 hectares of PCAs and 1,910 hectares of preserved native woods.
Socioenvironmental responsibility is one of main values which helped build this company. With Tramontina's Environmental Management Program, each step the company takes helps to strengthen a positive culture that is multiplied amongst employees and communities. More than simply acting on that which the environmental legislation establishes, Tramontina is a guardian of the environment. Not only does the company work honestly correctly and invest in equipment to protect nature, but it also fosters awareness and responsibility amongst its employees. Tramontina's Environmental Committee is composed of representatives of all manufacturing units and was created with the aim of aligning postures that consider experiences across the corporation, which also inspired the creation of the Conduct Manual.
